Thyroid Blood Spot Test: Collection Guide

Posted by Admin on

The female B-220 and male B-220M thyroid kits use a finger-prick dried blood spot sample collected at home. This article explains what the panel measures and how to prepare for the collection. Use the thyroid blood spot instructions as the source of truth for the exact collection timing, preparation, sample count and return steps. The Blood Spot Reference Guide provides additional information about sample quality.

What does the thyroid panel measure?

The matching thyroid kits list six markers: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), free triiodothyronine (fT3), total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOab) and thyroglobulin (Tgbn). The male and female versions use sex-specific reference ranges, according to their product pages.

Before you collect

Read the thyroid-specific PDF all the way through before opening the kit. Check the test code on your kit and paperwork, gather the supplied card and lancet, and prepare a clean, dry, well-lit surface. Follow the PDF for any timing, fasting, medicine or supplement guidance; requirements can differ between test panels, so don’t assume instructions from another kit apply.

Collect your dried blood spot

  1. Wash and dry your hands, then follow the PDF’s instructions to warm your fingers and prepare the card.
  2. Write your details on the card where shown. Avoid touching the filter-paper areas.
  3. Use the supplied lancet as directed and place blood on the marked areas exactly as the thyroid instructions show. Follow the guide for the required drops and whether to wipe away the first drop. Avoid smearing or layering blood.
  4. Let the card dry for the full time stated in the PDF. Do not pack it while it is still damp.
  5. Check that the card is labelled and packed as directed, then complete the paperwork and return it using the kit’s packaging and shipping instructions.

Check your sample before posting

Before sealing the return package, confirm that the details on the card match your paperwork and that the sample has dried completely. The linked Blood Spot Reference Guide explains why sample quality and clean handling matter. If a collection step goes wrong or you are unsure whether the card is usable, contact the laboratory using the details supplied with your kit rather than guessing or sending an uncertain sample.

Explore the matching tests

See the Female Thyroid Test Kit (B-220) or Male Thyroid Test Kit (B-220M), or browse the Thyroid Imbalance collection. The product pages list results within 3–5 working days after the laboratory receives the sample.
