What Does a Morning Cortisol Test Measure?

Posted by Admin on

A morning cortisol test measures cortisol at one point after waking. It can report that sample’s measurement, but one result is not a full-day cortisol profile and cannot, by itself, diagnose a condition or explain symptoms.

The Male Morning Cortisol Saliva Test and Female Morning Cortisol Saliva Test uses saliva and LC-MS/MS to measure one marker: morning cortisol.

When should the sample be collected?

The product instructions say to collect within 30 minutes of waking, before 9am and ideally between 6am and 8am. They also say to collect before eating, drinking or brushing your teeth. Follow the kit instructions for the exact timing and handling steps.

What can one result tell you?

The report provides a morning cortisol measurement with male and female specific reference information and specialist doctor interpretation. It does not show the complete daily cortisol pattern or prove that cortisol is the cause of fatigue, sleep problems or other symptoms. A qualified healthcare professional can interpret it alongside your health history and other clinical information.
