How to Prepare for Multiple Saliva Collections
Posted by Admin on
Some saliva hormone panels require more than one sample collected at specific times. The number of samples and timetable depend on your panel, so check the test code on your requisition before you begin. This article summarises the Saliva Collection Instructions PDF; follow the complete directions supplied with your own kit.
Check your panel and collection day
Match the test code on your requisition to the collection requirements and timetable in the guide. The PDF notes that not every panel needs all the materials in the kit. It says men, children and non-menstruating women may collect on any day of the month. If your kit requires cycle-specific timing, follow its full instructions or ask the laboratory.
If you use hormones, list them on the requisition and continue them as prescribed. The guide also recommends changing sheets, pillowcases and towels the night before collection, and avoiding contact with bathroom surfaces that may have hormone residue.
Prepare before collection
- Three days before: the guide advises avoiding anti-ageing or anti-wrinkle facial creams and biotin (vitamin B7) products, including some hair and nail formulas. If any product is prescribed or medically advised, check with your healthcare professional or the laboratory before changing its use.
- The night before: stay well hydrated, but avoid excessive fluid intake.
- Before your first sample: do not eat, drink anything other than water, or brush your teeth before collection.
- Before later samples: the guide says not to eat, drink anything other than water, or brush your teeth for at least two hours before collections throughout the day.
Collect, label and repeat as directed
Use the panel-specific timetable in the PDF rather than assuming every kit has the same schedule. Let saliva pool in your mouth, then transfer it to the tube. Fill each tube at least halfway, not counting bubbles. The guide says a collection usually takes 15–30 minutes, depending on saliva flow, and suggests gently tapping the tube on a hard surface if bubbles are filling it.
Screw the cap on securely and label the tube with your name, collection date and time. Repeat for any additional collection times using the smaller 5 mL tubes provided, if applicable. Keep each sample matched to its collection time.
Pack and return your kit
Complete the requisition form and any additional paperwork. Place the sample or samples and documents back in the test kit box, include payment if applicable, then close the box and place it in the return packaging. Add the prepaid label or postage if required and use the carrier specified for your kit.
Keep the full saliva collection instructions beside you while collecting, especially for the exact timing and number of samples required by your panel.
