The Advanced Neurotransmitter & Stress Hormone Test combines a 26-marker urinary profile with measurements of cortisol, cortisone, melatonin metabolite, norepinephrine and epinephrine.

With 50 laboratory measurements, including repeat measurements across the day, this dried urine panel provides additional biochemical information to discuss with your healthcare professional when assessing concerns involving mood, stress, energy, concentration or sleep.

Urinary results reflect substances excreted by the body. They do not directly measure neurotransmitter levels in the brain or establish the cause of your symptoms.

What Does This Test Measure?

Neurotransmitters, Precursors and Metabolites

The panel includes the following substances, alongside creatinine:

• Tryptophan and serotonin pathway: Tryptophan (Trp), serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA).
• Amino acids and related neurotransmitters: GABA, glycine (Gly), taurine (Tau), glutamate (Glu) and glutamine (Gln).
• Histamine pathway: Histidine (His), histamine (HIST) and N-methylhistamine (N-MeHist).
• Phenylethylamine and tyrosine-related markers: Phenylethylamine (PEA), tyrosine (Tyr) and tyramine (Tyra).
• Dopamine pathway: Dopamine (DA), DOPAC and homovanillic acid (HVA).
• Catecholamines and related metabolites: Norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (Epi), normetanephrine (NMN) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA).
• Kynurenine pathway: Kynurenine (Kyn), kynurenic acid (KynAc), 3-hydroxykynurenine (3OHKyn) and xanthurenic acid (Xanth).

Creatinine (Crtn) is included to help account for differences in urine concentration. It is part of the 26-marker profile but is not a neurotransmitter.

Daily Hormone Measurements

The 50-measurement total includes the profile and repeated measurements listed above. It does not mean 50 different substances or 50 samples.

What is a urinary neurotransmitter test?

It measures selected neurotransmitters, their precursors and their breakdown products in urine. The results provide information about the substances your body excretes and should be interpreted within a wider clinical assessment.

Does this test measure neurotransmitter levels in the brain?

No. Urinary neurotransmitter levels do not directly measure neurotransmitter concentrations or activity in the brain.

Can this test diagnose anxiety, depression, ADHD or insomnia?

No. U-343 cannot diagnose these conditions or establish that your symptoms are caused by a “chemical imbalance”. Diagnosis requires an appropriate assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.

Why are samples collected at different times?

Urinary hormone output varies throughout the day. Timed collections allow the laboratory to assess daily patterns.

Does the test measure melatonin directly?

It measures 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (MT6s), the main urinary breakdown product of melatonin, as an indirect indicator of melatonin production.

What is the difference between U-342 and U-343?

Both panels include the neurotransmitter profile and daily cortisol, cortisone and melatonin metabolite measurements. U-343 adds daily norepinephrine and epinephrine measurements, bringing the total to 50 measurements, compared with 42 for U-342. These totals include repeated measurements and creatinine.

Do I need to collect five urine samples?

The collection process uses four timed dried urine samples. Laboratory measurement counts do not represent the number of separate samples you need to collect. Follow the instructions supplied with your kit.
